I didn't have high expectations coming into this movie having not been familiar with James Gray as a writer so it was pleasantly surprising to see a quality space story. Now, by no means am I comparing this to the likes of a say, Interstellar" or "2001: A Space Odyssey" though it has some similar elements, but it ends up standing on its own two feet. For me, things tend to get a bit stale but James Gray does a fantastic job of employing action scenes every other scene well into the story. That kept my attention and it was worth it to stay. Brad Pitt was a stuntman in July (Once Upon a Time. In Hollywood. now he's an astronaut, Roy McBride, who has a connection to a member of a space team, his father Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) that looses connection to home in outer space while searching for extraterrestrial life. This sets up a poignant performance that showcases his ranging skill. Despite limited screen time from supporting cast members Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler & Donald Sutherland, they help unveil or reveal things about and to Pitts character. Hoyte van Hoytema's cinematography delights the moviegoer with 2001: A Space Oddysssyesque colours as well as Max Richter's score that delivers the aesthetic setting up the movie that explores life. The narrative sticks with the ever-important theme of maintaining connection & curiosity. Connection with the ones we love, ourselves and the Universe but also curiously searching for what is not known which is number one on my criteria for a space/sci-fi movie. It accomplishes a telling story of loss that demands a tear or two. I don't understand movie ratings really so my way of evaluating a film is, if I can get through the first fifteen minutes then I rate it a ten. Otherwise, it's a zero, I leave the theatre, I wouldn't give it an eight, five or one. So this gets a well-deserved ten for a mission movie that doesn't blow you away but keeps you glued to your seat asking, What next.
